I haven't been to the Imperial Palace East Gardens I haven't been to the Imperial Palace East Gardens in Tokyo for a long time, but it was nice to be back there this spring and see the seasonal flowers, especially azalea and roses.

The Imperial Palace East Gardens (in Japanese Kōkyo Higashi Gyoen 皇居東御苑) are a part of the inner palace area and are the former site of Edo Castle's inner circles. None of the main buildings remain today, but the moats, walls, entrance gates and several guardhouses still exist.

The East Gardens are open to the public and it is free to enter, however, be ready for your bags to be checked at the entrance.

The area is wide and there is a lot of space to walk. You can enjoy your stroll around and sit down at one of the many benches. While the base of the main castle tower is located at the Honmaru area, I personally prefer the Ninomaru area with the Japanese garden and the pond.

Have you visited the Imperial Palace East Gardens?

May 5th is Children's Day (#こどもの日) in Ja May 5th is Children's Day (#こどもの日) in Japan, so let me share the pretty carp streamers that are decorated around Tokyo Skytree. I'm happy I finally made it there to see them. Setting up the koinobori 🎏 has a long tradition and is wishing for the children to grow up strong and healthy.

The Koinobori Festival at Tokyo Skytree is still going on until Sunday, so don't miss to pay it a visit if you are in Tokyo during Golden Week. Or save this for next year 😉

Would you ever imagine visiting a cafe that opened Would you ever imagine visiting a cafe that opened in an old station building? 🚉

Established in 1925, the Daiyuzan Line connects Odawara Station with Daiyuzan Station, and it is soon celebrating its 100th anniversary. It was popular for pilgrims visiting the temple Daiyuzan Saijoji, but the number of users is declining.

Now, an old management office building located directly next to Odawara Station, was renovated and switched into a lovely retro-modern cafe ☕

"Daiyuzan Line Ekisya Cafe 1-1" (大雄山線 駅舎カフェ 1の1) is the name of the cafe that opened in December 2022 - and which I got to know through a TV program.

The exterior of the building, including the entrance, has been preserved as it was at the time, and the exterior walls were not repainted to preserve the atmosphere of the early Showa period as much as possible. Inside you still can find items from the old station and trains and you are welcomed with the ringing of the station bell.

The menu is a mix of savory dishes and sweets - we went for the second and everything was very delicious. However, sneaking to the other tables, the savory dishes with pasta and more looked mouthwatering, too. Also, the staff working there was very friendly and open to talk with us.

A really lovely place I can recommend for your next visit to Odawara City.

Let the carps fly 🎏 Children's Day, in Japanese Let the carps fly 🎏
Children's Day, in Japanese Kodomo no Hi #こどもの日 , is celebrated on May 5th and many public places such as families hang up the koinobori in the days before this public holiday. Originally it was the Boys' Festival only, but nowadays it is meant for all children.

The carp streamers symbolize the carps' courage and strengh, because they can swim up the stream. So they are expressing the hope that children will grow up strong and healthy like the wild carps.

I always wanted to visit Kameido Tenjin Shrine (亀戸天神社) during the wisteria festival, because it is known as one of the best places to see wisteria in Tokyo - and finally, I made it there this year! The shrine is located in a quiet neighborhood of Tokyo, a short walk from Kameido Station.

The wisteria at Kameido Tenjin Shrine were already planted during the Edo period and usually bloom around mid-to-late April. During that time a festival is held and you can find food stalls there. In 2023 the festival is taking place from 15th April until 5th May.

The beautiful wisteria bloom in purple, pink and white colors, building a wonderful contrast with the red bridges above the pond on the shrine grounds. Also, so you find Tokyo Skytree in the background.

💡 Note, that it can get very crowded there as it is a popular spot. So if you want to take some nice portrait photos and enjoy the nice atmosphere, go early in the morning.

Happy Spring 🌸🌷🌸 My parents are arriving Happy Spring 🌸🌷🌸
My parents are arriving in Japan today - finally, after they were supposed to come here already in autumn 2021. But well, you all know what happened in the last years 💦

Next to my usual work, I was busy planning a two-weeks-stay around Tokyo area for my parents & auntie, especially with the point that they can't walk that much, which is a huge challenge in Japan. But well, let's see how they gonna like the schedule I put up for them!

Since they speak neither English nor Japanese, I gonna be with them the next 2 weeks and I'm not sure how much time I gonna have to make informative feed posts - at least I want to share a bit, so I try to keep my stories moving and hope you gonna join in there.

Have a lovely spring season everyone ♥

Sakura Street 🌸🚗🚍🌸 Since moving to Jap Sakura Street 🌸🚗🚍🌸
Since moving to Japan in autumn of 2016 I am living in the Sagamihara / Machida area and I'm really loving it here. Step by step, I am getting to explore my living area more, so this year I grabbed my camera and finally took some photos of the Sakura Street around Sagamihara City Hall.

It has been selected as one of Kanagawa Prefecture's 100 flower viewing spots with approximately 300 Somei-Yoshino trees planted along the street. It's not a place for a hanami picnic, but nice for a stroll and taking some photos of "streets surrounded by cherry blossoms".

Sakura Night Garden 🌸✨ A special collaboratio Sakura Night Garden 🌸✨
A special collaboration between the Digital art collective @naked_inc and Shinjuku Gyoen is taking place in Tokyo right now. The huge garden has around 900 cherry blossom trees of 70 different varieties and these are lit up in pretty lights and projection mapping until April 23.

Enjoy the cherry blossom trees in the dark, have a nighttime picnic, and enjoy walking around with one of the five different colored lanterns. There are also seasonal drinks and food available inside the park.

🕗 Shinjuku Gyoen is open from 19:00 to 22:00 during the event, with the last admission at 21:00. We went on the opening day and the crowds to get inside the garden were huge - we had to line up for 1.5 hours to enter! So, especially if you are planning to visit at the weekend, prepare to come earlier for lining up.

💴 Tickets for Monday to Thursday are 1.800 yen at the entrance (advanced tickets: 1.600 yen), while Friday to Sunday and holidays are 2.200 yen on the day (advanced 1.800 yen). However, they listed up some dates without same-day tickets on the website, so better book your tickets online beforehand.
